IMPORTANT NOTE: I frequently update this page due to the many questions I receive from all levels of computer users. Sometimes, older browsers do not refresh the page if you have been here before. To make sure you have the current update,  Click HERE one time and after the page reloads, continue reading. Enjoy!

ANOTHER NOTE: I have extensively rewritten this installation because of all the little problems that seem to crop up during an installation. This Tempest emulator will run the Rev1 TEMPEST ROM when it is finished. You can add the later version ROM's after you get this installation working.

How To Do It!   Read everything on this page before you do anything!

bulletLast update: 8 April 2003
bullet
bulletRead this if you want to know All about MAME.
bullet
bulletI assume you know some basic windows commands. If not, e-mail me for help.
bullet
bulletCreate a directory called MAME32. I would put it somewhere you can find later, like in the C: drive. You name the spot! You may have to refresh to see the MAME32 directory.
bullet
bulletDetermine which operating system you are using. Most probably, you are using Windows95, 98, ME, NT, W2K, etc.
bullet
bulletIf you are using Win95/98, ME, NT or W2K, download m32-057.zip . It's 2.51 Mbytes. Be sure and save it to the MAME32 directory you created earlier on your computer.
bullet
bulletDon't use a MAME version that is not designed for your operating system - i.e., don't load a DOS version on any Windows operating system. If you are using any other operating system, go to The MAME net and choose your file.
bullet
bullet You need a copy of PKZIP or some other unzip program to expand zipped files. You can get a free copy of PKZIP for Windows at WinSite. The link is: PkZip
bullet
bulletGo to the MAME32 directory. You must unzip the MAME file. Use PKZIP to unzip it into the MAME32 directory. Close PKZIP when it says "done".
bullet
bullet Then create the TEMPEST1 directory within the MAME32/ROM directory.
bullet
bullet Next, download the TEMPEST1 ROM.
bullet
bulletTo do this, go to: Tempest Version 1 ROM Images
to download the TEMPEST1 ROM. Put it in the TEMPEST1 directory that you created earlier. It should be in the MAME32/ROM directory.
bullet
bulletShould you find the above link unusable, contact me at ROM@rocketranch.com to find out how to get the ROM.
bullet
bullet Find Mame32.exe or Mame.exe and create a shortcut to place onto your desktop. You will run the program (not now) from this icon. To create a shortcut, right click the Mame32 icon in the MAME32 directory, and select create shortcut. It will make one and put it after the last file in that directory. Then, left click and hold the mouse button down on the shortcut, drag it to an empty space on your desktop, and release the mouse button. The new shortcut will be there!
bullet
bulletVerify the TEMPEST ROM1 file you downloaded is in the TEMPEST1 subfolder of the MAME32/ROM folder. You need to unzip it.
bullet
bullet Go to the Mame32 icon on the desktop and double-click it. This launches the MAME emulator. The open folder is "All Games". Click "Available". Is TEMPEST there?
bullet
bulletIf not, click Options, then Directories. ROM should be highlighted. Click Insert, then find the Mame32 directory you created and click it. Then click OK. Click OK again, and the emulator should start looking for games. It should now show "Tempest (rev 1)" in the Game list. Close the MAME emulator.

You are basically adding the Mame32 directory path to the ROM search location. When you have added the mame32 directory, you should see its path in the rom window. Make sense?

Be sure and follow the above directions. After you are through, you should see the path something like this:

It should match the path where your mame32 directory is located.
bulletIf you had any problems, start over. If not, go ahead!
bullet
bullet Go to the Mame32 icon on the desktop and double-click it again. This launches the MAME emulator.
bullet
bulletThe "Available Folder" should show Tempest in the "Game" window. If not, press the "F5" key on your keyboard. The Game list should have the "Tempest (Rev1)" showing. If so, you have successfully installed the TEMPEST Emulator! Congratulations!
bullet
bulletI have installed this on a W2K machine. This version works great!
bullet
bulletDouble-click the Tempest (rev 1) name. Wait a moment for it to start.
bullet
bullet If all goes well, you will launch a great copy of TEMPEST!

Press 6 to add coins to the machine.
